Lesson 03: Literary Techniques

Introduction:



Literary techniques are the tools that writers use to create meaning and evoke emotions in their readers. Today, we will delve into three important literary techniques: repetition, personification, and alliteration. These techniques are commonly used in literature to enhance the beauty and impact of the written word.



 



Part 1: Repetition



Definition: Repetition involves repeating words, phrases, or ideas to emphasize and reinforce a particular theme or message.



Examples:




  • The rain fell softly, softly on the roof.

  • The waves whispered, whispered secrets to the shore.

  • The laughter echoed, echoed through the empty hallways.

  • Time and time again, he told the same story.

  • The teacher reminded us, reminded us to study diligently.



Activity 1: Identify Repetition



Read a short passage and identify instances of repetition. Discuss how repetition contributes to the overall meaning and mood of the text.



 



Part 2: Personification



Definition: Personification involves giving human-like qualities to non-human entities, animals, or abstract concepts.



Examples:




  • The wind danced through the trees.

  • The sun smiled down on the meadow.

  • Fear knocked on the door of his heart.

  • The flowers nodded their heads in agreement.

  • The river whispered its ancient secrets.



Activity 2: Create Personification



Students will choose an inanimate object or animal and write a short paragraph personifying it. Share and discuss their creative expressions.



 



Part 3: Alliteration



Definition: Alliteration is the repetition of initial consonant sounds in neighboring words.



Examples:




  • Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

  • Silly snakes silently slithered through the grass.

  • The moonlit meadow mesmerized the mysterious owl.

  • Sally sells seashells by the seashore.

  • The brave bird boldly faced the fierce storm.



Activity 3: Tongue Twisters



Create and practice tongue twisters that use alliteration. Discuss how alliteration adds rhythm and musicality to language.
